Your ear is made up of three sections - the Outer Ear, the Middle Ear, and the Inner Ear.
Sound waves flow into your ear by the Pinna, the outer portion formed to help guide sound into the Ear Canal. These parts make up your Outer Ear.
The sound travels through the Ear Canal striking the Ear Drum, causing the Ear Drum to vibrate.
The Ossicles, or bones which are connected to the ear drum, are made up of three parts - the Hammer, Anvil, and Stirrup. When the Ear Drum vibrates, these bones begin to vibrate as well.
This vibration causes the bones to mechanically conduct the sound through the Middle ear to the Inner Ear. This mechanical energy is changed to hydraulic energy through the movement of the Cochlear Fluids passing over the hair cells in the inner ear.
The movement of the Hair Cells causes electrical impulses to travel via the 8th Cranial Nerve to the brain where your conscious mind becomes aware of the sound you hear.
Conductive Hearing Loss
Interruption of sound caused by blockage or damage to Outer and/or Middle Ear
Causes: Wax Buildup, Perforated Ear Drum, Damaged Ossicles
Treatment: Medical; such as wax removal. Hearing Aid Technology sometimes needed
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Caused by damage to the Inner Ear
Causes: Loud noise, Trauma, Aging, Disease
Treatment: Hearing Aid Technology
Mixed Hearing Loss
A combination of Sensorineural and Conductive Hearing Loss
Mixed Causes
Example: Wax Buildup and Damage to the Cochlea
